From backstage to the balcony and everywhere in between, the FREE Open House gives you an all-access pass to experience opera your way. There is something for everyone, whether you’re an opera veteran or you’re giving it a try for the first time. Come see how much fun opera can be!
Opera Exhibition Performances
Experience live performances by BLO and Boston’s leading conservatory and university opera programs inside the theatre on the orchestra level.
Performances will last 30 minutes.
11:30am – Boston Conservatory
1:45pm – Hear excerpts from the BLO’s current production, The Inspector. This uproariously funny production closes BLO’s 35th Anniversary Season.
3:30pm – Boston University Opera Institute & New England Conservatory
Backstage Tours
Visit the dressing rooms, make-up area and stage of the Shubert Theatre. Self-guided tours depart from Door #4 during non-performance times.
11:00-11:30am, 12:00-1:30pm, 2:15-3:15pm, and 4:00-4:50pm (Allow 25 minutes)
Wig & Make-up Demonstrations
Witness a transformation through the magic of stage make-up.
Demonstrations run all day during non-performance times.
Costume Shop Photographs
Don some costume pieces and model for the camera. Costumes for children and adults!
All day.
Puppet Making with Puppet Showplace Theatre
Have you ever wanted to stage your own opera? Toy Theatre, a puppetry style popularized in Victorian England, gives you everything you need to bring the magic of opera to life…in your living room! Learn how to create the opera experience in miniature from expert puppeteer Brad Shur, Artist-in-Residence at Puppet Showplace Theatre.
April 28th is the National Day of Puppetry. In addition to BLO’s Open House, Puppet Showplace Theatre will be celebrating puppetry throughout Boston. Check out puppetshowplace.org for more info and events!
