SUMMARY:In Search of the Lost Maestro: Rediscovering Edmond Dédé
DESCRIPTION:In Search of the Lost Maestro: Rediscovering Edmond Dédé    \nThursday\, March 19\, 2026 \n6:00 PM – 8:00 PM \n \nThe French Library \n53 Marlborough Street \nBoston\, MA 02116 \nTickets: $18 / $14 French Library Members\nLearn More \nREGISTER\nPresented by The French Library in partnership with Boston Lyric Opera.  \nDid you know that for more than a century\, one of America's greatest operas was lost to history?  \nBorn in New Orleans in 1827 as a free person of color\, Edmond Dédé became one of the most accomplished classical musicians of the 19th century. Trained in the European tradition and deeply rooted in Creole culture\, he built a remarkable career in France\, where he conducted orchestras and composed nearly 150 works.  Yet his greatest achievement\, a four-act French grand opera titled Morgiane ou le Sultan d'Ispahan\, was never performed during his lifetime.  \nMore than a century later\, Morgiane was rediscovered in the archives of Harvard University\, where librarian Andrea Cawelti uncovered the handwritten score. This extraordinary find sparked an international effort to restore and bring Dédé's long-forgotten masterpiece to the stage.  \nIn 2025\, Morgiane finally premiered in New Orleans\, followed by performances in Washington\, D.C.\, and at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York\, marking a historic moment in American music history.  \nFrench filmmaker Marguerite de Bourgoing will present her ongoing documentary research on Edmond Dédé and the remarkable journey of Morgiane. She will be joined by Andrea Cawelti of Harvard University\, who will share the story of the manuscript's discovery. The evening will also feature recorded musical excerpts from Morgiane\, from the newly released audio by Opera Lafayette. \n \nThe conversation will be moderated by Morgan Beckford\, Director of Learning at Boston Lyric Opera\, a soprano committed to broadening access to opera and celebrating diverse musical voices.  \nThis event offers a rare opportunity to rediscover a forgotten master and celebrate a powerful chapter of transatlantic and African American musical history. \n \nThis event will be presented in English and welcomes all interested attendees. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A with the audience\, and a reception with light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Boston is Writing an Opera! | A Public Workshop with Tracy K. Smith
DESCRIPTION:Boston is Writing an Opera!   \nA FREE Community Opera Public Workshop with poet Tracy K. Smith \nPresented by Boston Lyric Opera in partnership with Boston Symphony Orchestra\, the City of Boston\, and Boston Public Library. \nFebruary 14\, 2026 | 2:00-3:30PM\nBoston Public Library | South Boston Branch\n646 East Broadway\, Boston\, MA 02127 \nREGISTER\nWant to help create a new opera—by Boston\, for Boston? Share your stories!  \nJoin Tracy K. Smith\, Pulitzer Prize–winning poet and 22nd Poet Laureate of the United States\, for a community workshop and listening session that invites your voice into the making of a brand-new opera.  \nThis gathering is about more than listening—it’s about authorship. Together\, we’ll explore poetry and storytelling as tools for connection\, reflection\, and collective imagination. Participants will hear poems by Tracy and other contemporary poets\, and will be invited to respond—by speaking\, writing\, or simply sharing what resonates.  \nOver the coming months\, dozens of community listening sessions across the city will inform a libretto shaped directly by the lived experiences of Bostonians. Your stories\, language\, memories\, and questions will help inspire an opera that reflects the richness\, complexity\, and spirit of this city.  \nThe resulting opera—rooted in Boston’s voices and created in partnership with its communities—will premiere at Symphony Hall in May 2027. \nNo previous experience with poetry or opera is required. This space is open to all who feel a connection to Boston—whether lifelong\, newly arrived\, or somewhere in between.  \nCan’t join us in person? Stay tuned for ways to participate virtually and add your voice from wherever you are. \n  \nWHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO  \nARRIVAL  \nThe South Boston Branch is open from 9:00AM – 5:00 PM on Saturday. The workshop space will open at 1:45 PM.
