2016 Carmen School Performance
In celebration of our 40th Season, in partnership with the BPS Visual and Performing Arts Office and non-profit Brighter Boston, English High School welcomed BLO’s principal cast members of Carmen this past September to perform an abridged version of the opera for 200 Boston Public High School students followed by a moderated question and answer session.
In advance of the performance, BLO worked with select teachers at EHS to bring a Teaching Artist into classrooms to introduce opera to the students. The performance was open to BPS high school classes throughout the district. For a large majority of the audience this was their first experience seeing a live opera performance. This marks the first step in BLO’s initiative to more deeply engage high school students in the performing arts through opera.
Brighter Boston, a non-profit that trains, mentors, and provides paid internships to BPS students in theatrical and event lighting, engaged Boston Arts Academy students as interns to provide lighting for the performance.
“One thing I enjoyed about the Carmen performance was that the music was new and very interesting to me.”
