This spring, Boston Lyric Opera invites you to experience something truly extraordinary: Noah’s Flood, a powerful all-ages opera that brings together art, community, and a message that resonates more deeply than ever.
Based on a 15th-century play and set to music by Benjamin Britten—who was inspired by a flood that reshaped his own town—Noah’s Flood tells a timeless story of resilience in the face of crisis. Today, as our world grapples with the realities of climate change, this story takes on new urgency and meaning.
What makes this production even more special is how it’s being created: with our community, for our community.
Under the leadership of David Angus and Dayron J. Miles, and in collaboration with nearly a dozen local arts and community organizations, Noah’s Flood features hundreds of Boston-area youth alongside BLO artists. It’s our first-ever participatory community opera, and it reflects everything we believe opera can be: bold, beautiful, inclusive, and deeply connected to the world around us.
Creating art together
At Boston Lyric Opera, we know that the arts have the power to transform lives and bring communities together. By collaborating with local schools, arts organizations, and youth programs, we create opportunities for young people to engage with opera in meaningful, inspiring ways. These partnerships allow us to reach beyond the stage, making opera accessible, relevant, and rooted in the diverse voices of our city. Together, we’re not just creating performances—we’re building connections, nurturing creativity, and strengthening the cultural heartbeat of Boston.
Why should audiences see Noah’s Flood?
From Stephanie LaShoto-Westfield, Executive Director of Back Bay Ringers
“Audiences should come to see this true community collaboration to experience artists from across the region as they join together to share their musical gifts to create a unique musical and theatrical experience! BBR is very excited to share our admittedly unusual instrument (handbells) with our audience and our fellow musicians as well!”
From Jared Field, Director of Programming, Community Music Center of Boston
“Because we need community now more than ever. This is a rare and beautiful opportunity to see so many different musicians from so many different backgrounds coming together to bring this gorgeous work to life.”
From Dayron J. Miles, Stage Director for Noah’s Flood
“This moment for our community to come together, with more than 150 youth from many different community partners, and not only witness a story about resilience, but participate, is more than exciting these days – it’s necessary. Every opportunity for us to come together from our different walks of life to have a shared experience like Noah’s Flood gives us the opportunity to emerge as a stronger, more connected city. There is nothing Boston can’t accomplish together, and that’s what we are celebrating with Noah’s Flood: even after a flood, we are Boston-strong!”
From David Angus, BLO Music Director
“Come and hear over 250 children of all ages and abilities performing this ancient story that is so relevant to our world today. Hear the thrilling climax with bells, bugles, organ, orchestra, singers and audience, all combining to lift the roof of Symphony Hall!”
From Alexis Peart, BLO Jane & Steven Akin Emerging Artist, singing the role of
Mrs. Noah
“Noah’s Flood is a story about hope and resilience that focuses on times of change, immense uncertainty, and how we all cope and find ways to come together – whether that’s through family, faith, or whatever brings you joy and hope. This is a poignant work about community, made by the community of BLO and many incredible partners, celebrating the joy of music making. I can’t remember the last time we had this many artists, children, and community members coming together on a project like this. I hope you join us for this show!”
Amy Advocat, BLO Manager of Institutional Communications & Philanthropy
“Noah’s Flood is not your typical opera experience – this is a one-of-a-time opportunity for audiences and youth performers to participate TOGETHER in a community-centric performance. Not only will you hear profound and beautiful music by famed British composer Benjamin Britten, but you’ll also support the incredible work by local young artists representing nearly a dozen youth and community-focused groups across the city. It’s a one-day only event – and it is not to be missed!”
Join us May 3 for this tour-de-force event that’s perfect for families, music lovers, and anyone who believes in the power of art to bring people together.
