Street Stage

Rolling Out Opera for All.
Boston Lyric Opera’s Street Stage was born in 2020, created to bring the power of live opera directly to communities during a time when gathering safely was a challenge. What began as a creative response to the pandemic has grown into a beloved tradition across Greater Boston. Our custom-built mobile stage brings world-class, live performances to parks, plazas, and street corners, completely free and open to all. Whether you’re a longtime opera lover or hearing it for the first time, BLO Street Stage invites everyone to experience the joy of live music, right in their own neighborhood.

Since its inception, BLO Street Stage has hosted two World Premieres – “my name is alondra” and MISOZDI YAMARIMBA.

“my name is alondra” premiered in May 2021 as part of Poetry in Music, a collaboration between Boston Lyric Opera, featuring poems by City of Boston Youth Poet Laureate Alondra Bobadilla set to music by tenor and 2020/21 BLO Emerging Artist Composer Omar Najmi.

Original narrative MISOZDI YAMARIMBA premiered in August 2021, in partnership between BLO and Castle of our Skins, featuring original music and narration from composer and soprano Tanyaradzwa Tawengwa-Nzou Mambano, the inaugural Creative-in-Residence with Castle of Our Skins, brought to life by artists from Boston Lyric Opera and musicians from Castle of our Skins.

Launched in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Street Stage is BLO’s mobile truck-turned-stage, designed with artwork by Boston-based artist ProBlak in partnership with local teen artists at Artists For Humanity, a Fort Point-based non-profit that provides under-resourced teens paid employment in the fields of art and design. The photos and timelapse video below show these artists hard at work in the parking lot of the Museum of Fine Arts, collaborating on the bright, fun, eye-catching mural that has become an iconic sight at Street Stage events in various communities and spaces all over the city.
