Approximate run time: 75 Minutes

One of the best mezzo-sopranos of this generation: Raehann Bryce-Davis in Recital.

Raehann Bryce-Davis, hailed as “one of the best mezzo-sopranos of this generation” (The New York Observer), takes the stage in a classical crossover recital presented by Boston Lyric Opera. Celebrated for her “powerhouse vocals” (OperaWire) and commanding presence, Bryce-Davis brings her extraordinary artistry to an evening of music that moves through generations of repertoire to arrive at something urgent and new.

The program opens with Amy Beach’s “Three Browning Songs” and Alban Berg’s “Sieben frühe Lieder (Seven Early Songs)” — turn-of-the-century works with rich, expressive tonal palettes. Next, Bryce-Davis turns to works that center Black composition and narrative, including her own piece “Evolution,” and three songs by Maria Thompson Corley: “I Am Not An Angry Black Woman,” “The Beauty in my Blackness,” and “Black Rider’s Freedom Song.” From there, she moves to selections by Jake Landau, the spiritual “Stand the Storm,” and Andrew Marshall’s “Dis is my Word,” rounding out a program that asks who gets to tell their story, and how.

A dynamic performer equally at home with Verdi, Wagner, and new commissions, Bryce-Davis has graced the stages of The Metropolitan Opera, Dutch National Opera, and Los Angeles Philharmonic—earning acclaim for her “rich, velvety tone” and dramatic depth. This is an evening with one of the defining mezzo-sopranos of this generation, in a program that speaks directly to this moment.
