March 7, 2024 - “Getting into Opera” GBH Music will introduce new listeners to opera in a video series produced in collaboration with Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) and New England Conservatory (NEC). Opera Night at the BPL   Composer Julia Perry's Revolutionary Music   March 21, 2024    6-7PM   Visionary Black composer Julia Perry (1924-1979) was a revolutionary artist whose groundbreaking operas, symphonies, and choral works innovatively combined musical idioms of the African diaspora with 20th century European techniques. On the anniversary of her 100th birthday, musician Ashleigh Gordon, co-founder of Castle of Our Skins and a powerful advocate for Black composers, will explore Perry's fascinating life and work in a dynamic discussion with conductor and composer Dr. Julius P. Boston Lyric Opera's production of The Wanderer's Tethering returns to the Prior Performing Arts Center at College of the Holy Cross! This piece, which BLO premiered in June 2023, combines poetry by Boston Poet Laureate Porsha Olayiwola and music by composer, vocalist, and multimedia artist Mason Bynes. It follows the story of Tobi, a descendant of the Igbo community, whose members were stolen from modern-day Nigeria and led a revolt on the shores of Georgia in 1803. Bynes’s music merges Negro spirituals and Igbo folkloric music, reflecting the transformation experienced by the contemporary protagonist as she claims her own identity. [...]
